Overview

Position Summary:

Under minimal supervision, performs general laboratory duties and techniques, ranging from very basic to moderate complexity, such as solution preparation, instrument control, calibration and troubleshooting, sample dilution, instrument quality control and general laboratory maintenance.

Key Accountabilities

Essential Functions:

  • Trains and supervises other laboratory technicians and/or temporary staff in the performance of general laboratory functions and use of instrumentation and reagents. 
  • May have responsibility for one or more laboratories with respect to adherence to corporate safety and biohazard policies, ISO guidelines and general housekeeping.
  • Maintains supplies for the labs of basic materials, such as gloves, glassware, etc. 
  • Keeps the inventory of general laboratory reagents. 
  • Controls and keeps records of the temperature of incubators, refrigerators and freezers. 
  • Performs routine maintenance and calibration of basic laboratory instruments. 
  • Prepares solutions and performs various laboratory procedures/experiments following established protocols. 
  • Participates in preparing test protocols; suggests improvements to test procedures. 
  • Identifies and solves routine problems; discusses non-routine problems with the supervisor.  Obtains data and performs analysis using statistical calculations. 
  • Prepares technical reports as required.
  • Maintains accurate, precise and legible laboratory notebooks of work performed.

  • Must demonstrate ability to read and understand written instructions, work with minimal supervision, and ability to make reasonable interpretation of situations within clearly established job framework.

Qualifications

Minimum Knowledge & Experience Required for the Position:

  • Position requires an in-depth knowledge of laboratory procedures typically acquired through successful completion of certificate or degree program, or equivalent, or through on-the-job training.
